What is Methadone?
Methadone is a long-acting opioid medication specifically designed to treat opioid use disorder. It works by preventing withdrawal symptoms, reducing cravings, blocking the effects of other opioids, and providing stability with 24–36 hours of relief per dose.
Unlike short-acting opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, or oxycodone, methadone provides steady relief without the peaks and valleys that drive continued drug-seeking behavior. When taken at the correct dose, methadone prevents withdrawal and reduces cravings without causing euphoria.
How Does Methadone Work?
Methadone is a full opioid agonist, meaning it activates the same brain receptors as other opioids but in a controlled, therapeutic manner. When taken as prescribed, it:
- Prevents withdrawal for 24–36 hours per dose
- Does not cause euphoria at the correct therapeutic dose
- Blocks other opioids from producing a high
- Helps restore normal brain function disrupted by chronic opioid use
